Organ transplants from people with cancer ‘help hundreds’

15th August 2016

A new report has indicated that hundreds of people in the UK have received an organ transplant from someone with a history of cancer.

Data obtained by the Press Association has revealed that 272 organ donors across the UK in the past five years had a history of cancer, with their donations resulting in 675 people receiving a transplant.

Further figures from NHS Blood and Transplant showed that 1,033 people who had suffered from some form of cancer went on to donate their eyes, showing this is a key area where these people have been able to make a positive impact.

The risk of donor-transmitted cancer in the UK is assessed as 0.06 percent, but despite this low chance of danger, there remains a misconception that people who have had the disease are not allowed to donate.

Professor John Forsythe, associate medical director for organ donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "We are very keen that everyone, regardless of their health status, registers a decision to donate and tells their family they want to donate."
