18th February 2008

Oxoid has launched its Remel RapID STAPH PLUS system, to be utilised for the biochemical identification of Staphyloccus species and related organisms.

Described by the company as a "rapid" and "convenient" manual identification system, the RapID STAPH PLUS offers clinical laboratories a new diagnostic tool which offers results within four hours.

It incorporates 18 biochemical tests, all of which can be inoculated simultaneously to be time effective and simplify the procedure.

The RapID STAPH PLUS can be used to identify Staphylococcus aureus and over 30 species of coagulase negative staphylococci – which are one of the most common causes of bacteraemia in hospital patients with indwelling medical devices.

Julie Elston, clinical products application manager at Oxoid, said: "The serious nature of bacteraemia means that there is little time to spare in determining the best course of action

"RapID STAPH PLUS gives rapid, same-day results, allowing appropriate therapy to be determined more quickly."

Oxiod is a global manufacturer and distributor of microbiological culture media and other biological products.
