Oxoid launches new antimicrobial strip

22nd April 2008

Oxoid has produced a new simultaneous-testing product for use in the treatment of critically ill patients.

The MICEvaluator (MICE) strips provide the simplicity of a diffusion method with the accuracy of an MIC test, the firm claims.

It says that the strips carry a stabilised antimicrobial on a convenient polymer strip offering a firm but flexible use that is easy to handle when applying them to pre-inoculated agar plates.

One of the product trialists, Dr Gunnar Kahlmeter from the department of clinical microbiology at Sweden’s Vaxio Central Hospital, explained that the strip had undergone extensive trials compared to a gold standard dilution technique.

"The MICE strips proved easy to handle in the laboratory, giving a good MIC correlation against the reference method when tested with a wide range of clinical and culture collection isolates," he added.

Amanda Appleton, clinical applications manager at Oxoid, said that an accurate MIC value is important in guiding antimicrobial therapy and can improve patient management.

She added: "This value can be obtained easily, quickly and with precision using MICE, without the need to invest in additional, complicated equipment."

The firm claims to be one of the world’s leading manufacturers and distributors of microbiological culture media and other diagnostic products.ADNFCR-1050-ID-18561762-ADNFCR
