Parents of sick children urged to visit pharmacies before GP or hospital

12th February 2018

NHS England has launched a campaign encouraging parents of children with minor illnesses to pay a visit to their nearest pharmacy before trying to book an appointment with their GP or heading to A&E.

A survey suggested that only six percent of parents with children under the age of five would consider consulting their pharmacist first.

When people visit their GP or nearest A&E for 'self-treatable' conditions such as stomach ache, earache or diarrhoea, it costs the health service GBP850 million a year, according to NHS England.

The body has now launched the Stay Well Pharmacy campaign to encourage people to go to their pharmacist first in order to save the NHS money and free up resources for the sickest patients.

Dr Bruce Warner, deputy chief pharmaceutical officer for NHS England, said: "Pharmacists are highly trained NHS health professionals who are able to offer clinical advice and effective treatments for a wide range of minor health concerns right there and then."

He also stressed that pharmacists have the right clinical training to ensure people get the care they need, if their symptoms suggest a more serious health problem.
