Patients ‘facing increasingly long waits for GP appointments’
Getting a timely appointment with a GP is set to become increasingly difficult over the next few years, according to a new report.
Analysis from the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) has indicated that if current trends continue, the number of instances in which patients have to wait a week or more to see a GP will rise from 80 million in 2016-17 to 102 million in 2021-22.
The report also showed that this problem is more pronounced in some parts of the country than others, with around 5.6 million patients in 21 clinical commissioning group areas currently having to wait at least a week for an appointment with their GP or practice nurse more than a quarter of the time.
According to the RCGP, this is because workloads in general practice have risen by 16 percent over the last seven years, while investment in the sector has declined and the size of the GP workforce has shrunk.
Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the RCGP, said: "With workload continuing to escalate, and with continuing resource and workforce pressures, the worrying outcome is that we will be unable to see all our patients who need to be seen."
