PCT provider committee guidance issued

30th July 2009

Primary care trusts (PCTs) have been given guidance to help them with their governance arrangements for provider committees.

Issued by the Department of Health and the Appointments Commission, the paper is called Governance arrangements to support PCT provider committees and sets out a range of principles that should support the make-up and membership of the panels.

Commenting, minister of state for health Mike O’Brien said that that the guidance will help to ensure that PCT provider committees are well-equipped to provide independent scrutiny, excellent management and clinical leadership.

Jonathan Montgomery, chair of Hampshire PCT, added: “I welcome the publication of today’s guidance, which contains principled and practical advice on how to ensure robust governance arrangements are in place for PCT-provided services.”

Earlier this month, health secretary Andy Burnham announced a package of measures that aim to tackle “exceptional failures” in foundation trusts, following failings identified at Mid Staffordshire NHS foundation trust.
