People in UK ‘unaware of dangers of type 2 diabetes’

24th September 2013

A lack of awareness of the serious potential consequences of contracting type 2 diabetes could be increasing the impact of the disease on many patients in the UK.

This is according to a report from charity group Diabetes UK, which revealed results from a survey indicating that less than one-third of Britons are aware of the serious health complications associated with the condition.

People across the country do not understand that diabetes can increase a person's risk of amputation, heart attack, blindness and stroke, leading the organisation to launch a new two million pound advertising campaign to raise awareness of these issues.

Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: "I worry that until we finally lay to rest the myth that type 2 diabetes is a mild condition, it will continue to be seen as something that is not worth being concerned about."

In the UK, approximately 2.9 million people are affected by diabetes, with 90 percent of these cases being the type 2 variant.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801641485-ADNFCR
