PerkinElmer sells medical imaging business to Varian Medical Systems

29th December 2016

PerkinElmer has agreed a deal to sell its medical imaging business to Varian Medical Systems.

The division, which supplies flat panel X-ray detectors to serve as components for industrial, medical and dental X-ray imaging systems, will be purchased by Varian Medical Systems as an addition to its imaging components business, which is set to become an independent public company called Varex Imaging next month.

A $276 million (225.35 million pounds) purchase price has been agreed, with the Varex business expecting the deal to accelerate its profitable growth with more than $140 million in new revenue when it closes during the first half of next year.

It employs around 280 members of staff and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with operations in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

Robert Friel, chairman and chief executive officer at PerkinElmer, said: "Combining our medical imaging business with Varian's capabilities will better position the business to support its customers and continue to innovate and develop new imaging systems."

He added that the divestiture will allow PerkinElmer to focus its investments and accelerate growth on areas that are of a higher strategic priority to the company.
