PerkinElmer ‘to purchase Viacell’

5th October 2007

PerkinElmer has announced the signing of a contract whereby the company will purchase Viacell.

Under the terms of the agreement, PerkinElmer states that it will commence a tender to buy all outstanding shares of the biotechnology company for an aggregate purchase price of around $300 million (147 million pounds).

Gregory L Summe, chairman and chief executive of PerkinElmer, stated that ViaCell has a "strong, established market presence" and has built a high-growth business based on "innovative" umbilical cord blood preservation technology.

He added that PerkinElmer was "excited" by the opportunity to combine its existing pre- and neonatal screening services with those offered by ViaCell.

Robert F Friel, president and chief operating officer of PerkinElmer, commented: "A growing number of disorders – which today includes blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia, and metabolic disorders – are treatable using the cord blood stem cells gathered and preserved through ViaCell’s ViaCord offering."

Last month, PerkinElmer announced the expansion of its digital x-ray detector fabrication facility in Santa Clara, California.
