Pfizer Animal Health to purchase diagnostics firm Synbiotics

30th December 2010

Pfizer Animal Health has agreed a deal to purchase Synbiotics, a manufacturer of immunodiagnostic tests for pets and food production animals.

The acquisition is expected to close later this week and will allow the veterinary medicine company to enter the diagnostics market for the first time, taking control of brand names such as Witness, Assure and Proflok.

Pfizer Animal Health has identified immunodiagnostics as a key new area for investment, as the sector is currently estimated to be growing at an annual rate of eight percent, twice the speed of the overall animal health industry.

Juan Ramon Alaix, president for Pfizer Animal Health, said the deal will allow the company to offer a greater range of point-of-care options for veterinarians, while also providing products for diagnostic reference laboratories and canine breeders.

"Our acquisition of Synbiotics … will bring Pfizer Animal Health closer to its goal of becoming a comprehensive solutions provider to the animal health industry," he added.

Last month, the company announced a new collaboration with the Easter Bush Research Consortium that will focus on a wide array of areas in animal health and welfare.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800317531-ADNFCR
