Pfizer announces research and clinical development collaboration

17th June 2008

Pfizer has announced that it has entered into a partnership agreement with a leading university which will see collaborations on scientific research and clinical development as well as clinical care and policy.

Under the terms of the deal, Pfizer will pay the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine the sum of $15 million (7.6 million pounds) over three-years, while scientists from both institutions will work together on translational research in a number of therapeutic areas and other projects of mutual interest.

A committee with members from both parties will solicit and review project proposals, while the initial focus of the partnership will be on oncology and neurosciences, though it may broaden to other areas in time.

Martin Mackay, president of global research and development at Pfizer, said: “This collaboration provides an opportunity for Pfizer and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine to build and implement a new model for interactions between industry and academic medical centres.”

He added that the partnership could provide a strong example for how the company uses its partnerships to enhance research and clinical development outcomes and consequently improve the lives of patients.

Last month, Pfizer announced the appointment of Amy W Schulman as senior vice-president and general counsel of the company.
