Pfizer launches new antibiotic Zavicefta in UK and Germany

14th March 2017

Pfizer has announced the launch of an important new antibiotic product called Zavicefta in the UK and Germany.

The novel combination antibiotic is intended for the treatment of patients with certain confirmed or suspected Gram-negative bacterial infections requiring hospitalisation, and has been developed in response to an urgent medical need for new antibiotics for this purpose.

It is indicated for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated urinary tract infections and hospital-acquired pneumonia, including ventilator-associated pneumonia, as well as aerobic Gram-negative organisms.

The European Medicines Agency approved Zavicefta in June 2016 based on the positive findings of an extensive clinical trial programme. It will be launched in additional markets throughout 2017 and 2018.

Dr Freda Lewis-Hall, executive vice-president and chief medical officer of Pfizer, said: "The launch of Zavicefta reaffirms Pfizer's longstanding heritage and commitment to patients facing serious infectious diseases."

In tackling the threat of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Enterobacteriaceae, Zavicefta is effective against two of the three critical pathogens recently identified by the World Health Organization.
