Pfizer sues Japanese firm in UK court

26th January 2006

Pfizer is to take the Japanese firm Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma (DSP) and its parent company Sumitomo Chemical to court in England over the production of Amlodin (amlodipine besylate), the hypertension and angina pectoris treatment.

Similar to a case in Japan Pfizer claims that the licence agreement for Amlodin should be terminated and all medical data about the drug should be returned after Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals’ merger with Dainippon Pharmaceutical, which formed DSP.

The Japanese company claims that an English court has no jurisdiction over the matter.

A spokesman added: “Even if the court determines that it has jurisdiction, however, Sumitomo Chemical and DSP are confident that the legitimacy of their position that the licence agreement remains in effect will be fully affirmed by the English court and that DSP will be able to continue undertaking the Amlodin business.”
