Pfizer to create new US gene therapy manufacturing facility

18th August 2017

Pfizer has announced plans to develop a new gene therapy manufacturing facility at its existing site in North Carolina.

The company's site in Sanford, Lee County has been selected for a $100 million (77.6 million pounds) investment that will create 40 jobs and expand Pfizer's capabilities in the strategically important area of gene therapy.

This potentially transformational technology focuses on highly specialised one-time treatments that address the root cause of diseases associated with genetic mutation by replacing defective or missing genes with corrected copies.

Pfizer's investment follows the 2016 acquisition of Bamboo Therapeutics, a privately held biotechnology company based in Chapel Hill focused on developing gene therapies for the potential treatment of patients with certain rare diseases.

Lynn Bottone, site leader at Pfizer's Sanford facility, said: "Pfizer is proud to further expand our presence in North Carolina, particularly as we build our leadership in gene therapy. We look forward to the next phase of this expansion as we build a clinical and commercial manufacturing facility."
