Pfizer welcomes new senior vice-president

7th March 2008

Pfizer has welcomed a new member to its executive leadership team with the appointment of William Ringo as the company’s senior vice-president of strategy and business development.

He will be responsible for guiding Pfizer’s overall strategic planning and business development activities, reporting to chief executive office (CEO) Jeff Kindler.

Mr Ringo started his career at Eli Lilly in 1973 and has extensive experience in sales, marketing, business and strategic planning, product development and general management.

From 2004 to 2006, he was CEO of biotechnology firm Abgenix where he transformed the company into a more focused product company and maximised its partnership with Amgen.

The partnership saw Amgen acquire Abgenix for $2.2 billion (1.1 billion pounds) in 2004 which was a double in value from when Mr Ringo joined as CEO.

Mr Kindler described Mr Ringo as a “highly regarded leader” who had enjoyed a long career as one of the most successful senior executives at Eli Lilly.

“Bill’s broad range of experience in both the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors make him uniquely qualified to guide our strategy and business development and to help drive the innovation agenda that is one of the keys to our future success,” he added.

Last month, Pfizer announced the launch of a $33 million (17 million pounds) multi-year award programme which aims to tackle the growing challenges of cancer and tobacco around the world.
