Pfizer’s Rathbun named as CTO of SAFE-BioPharma Association

21st November 2005

George Rathbun, director of architecture in Pfizer’s global research and development informatics organization, has been named chief technology officer (CTO) of SAFE-BioPharma Association, it was announced today.

SAFE-BioPharma is an organisation set up to develop and manage a secure digital signature standard for use globally throughout the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Mr Rathbun, who has been seconded from Pfizer, will oversee and administer all aspects of technology for SAFE-BioPharma. He will serve as chairman of the SAFE Technology and Implementation Working Groups and as the chief systems architect for SAFE.

“George Rathbun’s background at Pfizer, knowledge of SAFE, and his broad knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry make him the ideal person to lead SAFE’s technology development and implementation,” said Mollie Shields-Uehling, president and CEO, SAFE-BioPharma Association.

SAFE is sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry and is designed to be an integral component of the global eHealth movement.

It is an identity assurance standard that reduces the complexity and cost of managing paper for the healthcare community. SAFE digital signatures are being used in business-to-business and business-to-regulator transactions and are legally enforceable and regulatory compliant.
