Pharmaceutical online hub to host resources on new EU directive
The National Pharmacy Association in the UK has launched a new online resource centre for people working in the pharmaceutical industry to help them understand the soon-to-be-introduced EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD).
As part of the FMD, which is set to come into play from February 2019, all new pharmaceuticals manufactured for the European market will need to include two features: a unique identifier barcode and an anti-tamper device.
These incoming rules are being introduced in a bid to improve medical safety and to prevent 'falsified' medicines that could pose potential harm to health from being sold on the European pharmaceutical market. As a result, action will be needed from manufacturers as well as pharmacists to ensure the new directive is implemented smoothly.
Raj Patel, chair of the UK's FMD Working Group for Community Pharmacy, explained: "We've launched FMD Source, a rapidly developing website, to provide an authoritative and reliable source of information on FMD – one that is based on the way UK pharmacies operate."
