Pharmacies ‘first defence’ against obesity
Pharmacies are the “frontline” in the battle against obesity in the UK, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) has claimed.
The society said that people should be made more aware of pharmacies and their role in the nation’s health.
It is important that the public are notified of the “holistic approaches” to weight loss that are available at community pharmacies, the RPSGB stated.
David Pruce, the RPSGB’s director of quality improvement, remarked: “Community pharmacies are well placed to play an effective part in the management of obesity and obesity-linked illnesses.
“They are among the most accessible healthcare professionals, with branches open in the high street at convenient times, often when GP surgeries are closed.”
According to the NHS Information Centre, the number of NHS prescriptions for obesity drugs has increased eightfold in the past seven years.
The findings also show that the cost of treating obesity and related illnesses consumes up to 2.6 of NHS expenditure.
