Pharmacists ‘can become medicine sector leaders’

13th September 2010

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) has predicted that pharmacists could come to be regarded as the leading force in the medicines industry in the next decade.

Martin Astbury, chairman of the organisation's shadow assembly, stated during its recent conference that pharmacists can assume a leadership role not only in the delivery of pharmaceutical services, but also in innovation and research.

According to the vision laid out by the RPSGB, this means that pharmacies will be trusted and recognised by patients and the industry as being the primary provider of healthcare services by 2020.

Mr Astbury told PJ Online he is confident these targets can be achieved, provided that the RPSGB is supported in accomplishing them.

He explained: "[The vision] is within our grasp – but in order to realise it, we need commitment from everyone in the profession, both to the vision and to the professional body."

Earlier this month, the National Pharmacy Association called for more awareness of the services provided by UK pharmacists, while highlighting the current ignorance of the sexual health provisions they can offer.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800062361-ADNFCR
