Pharmacists ‘local experts in medicine’

31st March 2008

The public should have greater access to over-the-counter (OTC) which are supplied with the supervision of pharmacists, an expert has asserted.

According to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), pharmacists have a lot to offer the community as they are experts in medicines and also placed within communities.

David Pruce, director of practice and quality improvement at the society, highlighted that pharmacists and other pharmacy staff are trained to ensure patients select the most appropriate OTC medicine.

“They will refer patients to their doctor if they think that they have a condition that warrants further investigation or requires treatment with a prescription-only medicine,” he explained.

Mr Pruce also addressed the issue of consumers buying their drugs online, urging them to only purchase medicines from pharmacies registered in Great Britain to ensure they are buying sage and appropriate drugs.

Earlier this month, Paul Bennett, chairman of the RPSGB’s English Pharmacy Board, called for an urgent review of the prescription charges and exemptions in England, referring to them as illogical and lacking in fairness.
