Pharmacy Voice highlights potential larger NHS role for pharmacists

28th June 2013

Pharmacy Voice has expressed hope that community pharmacists can help the NHS to cope with the increasing financial constraints it will be placed under in the coming years.

Responding to the latest government Spending Review, Rob Darracott, chief executive of Pharmacy Voice, noted that a nominal increase in the Department of Health budget for 2015-16 will not mean that the health service will be "flush with money".

As such, the NHS' focus is likely to be on cost containment rather than growth, meaning pharmacies could play a key role in delivering high-quality care in a cost-effective manner.

Mr Darracott also welcomed the government's intention to bring together parts of the health and social care system, with three billion pounds of the funding for services for older people to be jointly commissioned by the NHS and local councils by 2015-16.

He explained: "Community pharmacy sits where health and social care meet – commissioners really should be making the most of this."

Pharmacy Voice is the industry body representing UK community pharmacists and is a partnership between the National Pharmacy Association, the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies and the Company Chemists' Association.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801606077-ADNFCR
