Philips and Accenture create new app to aid ALS patients

13th August 2014

Philips has developed proof-of-concept software with Accenture that aims to improve quality of life for people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The app works in tandem with a wearable display and the Emotiv Insight Brainware device, which scans EEG brainwaves, that are then connected to a tablet.

It allows users to issue brain commands to control a variety of Philips products including the Lifeline Medical Alert Service, smart TVs and personal wireless lighting systems, as well as supporting eye and voice controls.

This allows patients to continue operating life-enhancing technology in their home even after they have lost muscle control and eye-tracking ability due to ALS or similar conditions.

Jeroen Tas, chief executive officer for healthcare informatics solutions and services for Philips, said: "Philips will continue to collaborate with innovative technology companies such as Accenture to explore new wearable and sensor solutions that change peoples' lives and create a healthier future."

Earlier this month, the firm announced the UK launch of its new Avalon Cableless Foetal Monitoring solution, with the first installation taking place at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801741935-ADNFCR
