Philips launches Breathe Boldly COPD awareness campaign

Philips has announced the launch of Breathe Boldly, a new social initiative that aims to raise global awareness of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The company is allying with the COPD Foundation and the family of the late actor Leonard Nimoy – who died of COPD last year – to help educate people around the world about the signs and symptoms of the deadly disease.

Social media users will be encouraged to post a photo or video on social media of themselves performing an activity while breathing through a straw with the hashtag #BreatheBoldly for #COPD.

This will give them an empathetic understanding of what life is like for those affected by the condition, which is responsible for more than three million deaths each year.

John Frank, general manager of Philips' sleep and respiratory care business, said: "We're hopeful that Breathe Boldly will not only increase global awareness of the disease, but also help people better identify symptoms of COPD and gain a better understanding of what it is like to live with this disease."

This comes after the firm sponsored a documentary called Remembering Leonard: His Life, Legacy and Battle with COPD earlier this year to further publicise the condition.
