Philips opens 50th Ambient Experience suite

26th February 2008

Royal Philips Electronics has installed its 50th Ambient Experience suite, with this landmark laboratory installed at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

The suites are the first-of-their-kind catheterisation labs that aim to give patients enhanced control over their environment in order to ease their anxiety.

Philips cooperates with hospitals and healthcare facilities in order to customise the design of the Ambient Experience suites to best suit their needs.

An interactive, people-focused healthcare environment, the Ambient Experience suites aim to increase operational effectiveness by fostering a more comfortable experience for both patients and staff.

The suites incorporate architecture, design and enabling technologies, including RFID, lighting, sound and projection.

Victor Hall, vice-president of cardiac services at Fairview Hospital, said: “Entering the cath lab for a heart procedure can be very scary for patients, so allowing them to choose the lighting and sound to create an environment such as a beach setting, can help to put them at ease with their surrounding.”

He added that the use of lighting makes the lab appear larger to alleviate feelings of claustrophobia potentially felt by patients.

In December 2007, Philips healthcare confirmed a merger agreement with clinical IT and service provider Visicu.
