Philips signs extension for radiation therapy agreement

27th June 2008

Philips Medical Systems (PMS) and RaySearch Laboratories have confirmed the extension of an existing agreement between the parties.

Their modulated radiation therapy will now cover a new treatment product for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT).

This is described as an advanced version of intensity modulated radiation therapy, whereby the equipment rotates around the subject as the treatment beam is activated.

According to a statement from Datamonitor, the VMAT product will be implemented into the Pinnacle2 planning system ? part of Philips’ offerings.

Branded with the name SmartArc, it is expected that the product will be available for clinicians in the early half of next year.

The results I have seen so far from the current prototype are very promising both in terms of treatment quality and delivery time as well as optimization speed, said Johan Lof, president of RaySearch.

“I am convinced that SmartArc will be highly appreciated by the Pinnacle3 users.”

The healthcare sector of Philips employs about 33,000 people, according to the company. It operates in areas such as imaging solutions and home healthcare systems.
