Phonak pilots distance fitting approach for hearing aids

7th June 2017

Phonak has announced the launch of a new pilot scheme in the US that will provide a distance fitting service for hearing aids to army veterans.

The company is allying with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on the project, which will incorporate the latest telehealth solutions and will commence its first field trials over the summer.

Veterans will be able to benefit from the VA HearAssist solution, which allows hearing aid wearers to connect with a smartphone to audiologists' fitting software via a secure internet connection in order to fine-tune the performance of the devices.

Using a Bluetooth link between the hearing aid and mobile app developed by Phonak, the audiologist can directly access the hearing aids, check and adjust their settings in real time, and offer advice to the wearer over streaming video.

The VA HearAssist programme will commence with clinical trials at three VA facilities in Cleveland, Chicago and Miami with a selected group of veterans.

Jan Metzdorff, president of Phonak in the US, said: "We have been working closely together for many years and this partnership once again proves our unwavering commitment to push the limits of technology and our efforts in the field of e-solutions for hearing care."
