PiP breast implant issue ‘may be wider than first thought’
Safety issues related to breast implants manufactured by Poly Implant Prothese (PiP) could be more widespread than was initially believed.
An investigation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has revealed that PiP implants made before 2001 may contain unauthorised silicone gel, contrary to initial guidance from French health authorities.
It was previously thought that only implants used after 2001 were subject to the increased rupture risk, with the new guidance meaning that an extra 7,000 women could be affected.
At present, the government does not believe there is enough evidence to support routine removal of PiP implants, but women affected are advised to speak to their doctors if they do wish to undergo an NHS-supported removal procedure.
Department of Health figures last month showed that around 3,000 patients have sought NHS guidance on the issue.
Mr Lansley said: "These women are the victims of a fraudulent company and I know this situation is causing a huge amount of anxiety."
