Plain packaging law for cigarettes comes into effect in UK

22nd May 2017

Laws dictating that all cigarettes in the UK be sold in plain, standardised packaging have come into effect as of May 20th 2017.

The regulations mean that tobacco products will be sold in uniform green packaging, with large graphic images on the front designed to demonstrate the health consequences of smoking, while health warnings also appear on the packs to help persuade smokers to quit.

This legal change was enacted last year, but the transitionary period has now ended, meaning all tobacco manufacturers are legally required to be compliant with the laws.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of health charity ASH, said: "Getting rid of glitzy, heavily branded tobacco packs is the latest in a long line of achievements by the UK, which is a global leader in tobacco control."

The UK was only the second country in the world to pass legislation on standardised packaging, following Australia in 2012. Since then, a number of others have followed Britain's example, including France, Ireland, Hungary and Norway.

It means the UK has now topped the European league table for tobacco policy implementation for four consecutive years.
