Promising Findings Found for Gingivitis Remedy on Dogs

15th November 2023

Periodontal disease, often known as gum disease, impacts dogs of different breeds with figures ranging from 44% to 100%. Initial signs of the illness include irritated gums and redness. Severe cases of gum disease can lead to heart and kidney issues as well as deterioration in memory and brain function.

Despite the well-known fact that raw or cooked garlic is toxic to dogs, Japanese experimenters have discovered that aged garlic extract improved gum disease for 10 beagles with mild symptoms. The garlic used was altered to be scentless and less aggravating to the canines.

Furthermore, in the past, aged garlic extract has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects in numerous human trials.

Researchers warned that more studies involving a range of breeds and gingivitis severities should be examined continuing onwards.

The paper published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science stated: “large-scale studies are needed to investigate the therapeutic effects of AGE on periodontal disease across a wide range of breeds and body sizes. Second, this study examined the effect of AGE only on mild gingivitis with gingival index of less than 1; thus, further studies are needed on dogs with more severe gingivitis and periodontitis.”
