Public Conference Launched to Discuss VMR

6th February 2023

A public conference covering suggested changes to the Veterinary Medicines Regulations has been opened by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

The aim is to bring legislation up to date and industry relevant, taking into account changes within the animal health sector and improving the relationship between business and government.

For stakeholders of the health and wellbeing of animals, more assurance will be provided through enhanced uniformity and transparency.

These individuals will have the opportunity to vocalise their opinions on the suggested changes to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate until March 31st this year.

The VMR are vital to the safeguarding of the environment and public/ animal health. They outline the current restrictions on the production, distribution, promotion, ownership, and use of veterinary drugs and drugs in animal food.

Minister for Biosecurity, Marine and Rural Affairs, Lord Benyon, described the need to “modernise the Veterinary Medicines Regulations and include new measures to help tackle antimicrobial resistance which will contribute to delivering UK’s 5-year national action plan.”

Chief Executive Officer of VMD, Abi Seager, expressed that “these proposals will enable the realisation of opportunities that independent regulation carries.” After taking stakeholder feedback on board, “the proposals aim to reduce regulatory burden, bring clarity and deliver regulation which balances the international supply landscape with our own national requirements.”
