Public dissatisfaction with NHS services on the rise, BMA warns
The British Medical Association (BMA) has warned the government that longstanding underinvestment in the NHS is eroding public satisfaction with the health service.
A 2017 survey conducted by the organisation polled 1,031 adults living in England found that 43 percent of respondents are now dissatisfied with the NHS, compared to only 33 percent who are satisfied. In 2015, these figures stood at 21 percent and 56 percent, respectively.
Moreover, 82 percent said they are worried about the future of the NHS, with 62 percent expecting the service to decline further in the coming years, whereas only 13 percent think it will get better.
The leading concerns are lack of funding – cited as a factor by 50 percent of those polled – while 41 percent worry that the NHS may cease to be free at the point of use, and 35 percent fear waiting times will increase.
Meanwhile, 69 percent expressed concerns that the NHS will not get sufficient attention because of Brexit.
Dr Mark Porter, leader of the BMA, said: "We still have one of the best healthcare systems in the world … but after years of underinvestment, with a growing, ageing population, and despite the extraordinary dedication of its staff, it is failing too many people, too often."
