Public Health England appoints builders for new campus in Essex

Public Health England has selected three construction firms to create its new GBP 400 million public health science campus in Essex.

Kier Group, Wates Construction and VolkerFitzpatrick have been chosen to undertake the four key elements of the process, including building and refurbishing new and existing laboratories and office areas, constructing a new arrivals area and logistics centre, and establishing site-wide infrastructure, such as car parking.

Thousands of construction-related jobs are expected to be created by these appointments, which will mean that building work can commence in 2019, ahead of the start of phase occupation of the new premises in 2021.

The campus, when complete, will be known as PHE Harlow and is expected to employ up to 2,750 people by 2024, with scope for further expansion. It will be used to support research into smoking, alcohol, diabetes, dementia, infectious diseases, environmental hazards and climate change.

Richard Gleave, Public Health England's deputy chief executive, said: "This is yet another milestone for Public Health England, and we can now look forward to the chosen contractors coming on board and bringing their considerable wealth of experience and skills to our programme."
