Public Health England to create new science campus and headquarters in Essex
Public Health England has obtained planning permission to establish a new headquarters in Harlow, Essex.
The new world-leading public health science campus will be known as PHE Harlow and is expected to employ up to 2,750 people by 2024, with scope for further expansion. This will involve relocating staff and facilities from its current London premises.
It is intended that the new campus will incorporate new technologies such as whole genome sequencing, public health interventions and big data to transform the delivery of public health science, helping to generate new insights into smoking, alcohol, diabetes, dementia, infectious diseases, environmental hazards and climate change.
PHE Harlow will be built at a site previously owned by GlaxoSmithKline at the New Frontiers Science Park on the Pinnacles Industrial Estate in Harlow. The site will be prepared for construction in 2018, with building work kicking off in 2019 and phased occupation starting in 2021.
Richard Gleave, Public Health England's deputy chief executive, said: "This landmark decision is one of the most important not just for Public Health England, but also for the nation's health. It allows us to build on the incredible work we already do to deliver some of the best public health science in the world."
