Public ‘often unaware of risks of unsafe tooth whitening’

2nd August 2016

Members of the British public are putting their health at risk by ignoring the risks posed by illegal and unsafe tooth whitening treatments, according to a survey.

Research by the Oral Health Foundation found that 28 percent of Britons would avoid going to the dentist for tooth whitening treatment, and instead purchase potentially unsafe home kits online or get it done illegally by a beautician or a kiosk.

This is because many are unaware that illegal tooth whitening can lead to severe chemical burns, possibly permanent scarring and tooth loss, potentially affecting their ability to eat and breathe.

Whitening can only be safely performed after a dentist has examined the patient to make sure there are no risks. The patient must also be over 18 years old, with the treatment carried out by a dental practitioner or under their direct supervision by a dental hygienist or dental therapist.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive officer of the Oral Health Foundation, said: "The cases where illegal and unsafe tooth whitening is leading to serious damage are increasing. There is no reason to put your health in peril and risk permanent and severe damage in order to emulate the fake smiles you see on TV."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801823021-ADNFCR
