Qiagen makes donation of HPV tests to India

8th June 2010

Qiagen has reaffirmed its commitment to the prevention of cervical cancer across the world with the donation of around 26,000 human papillomavirus (HPV) tests to India.

The science company is supplying the digene HPV testing kits to the Nargis Dutt Memorial Cancer Hospital in Barshi, Maharashtra, which previously conducted a landmark trial into methods of cervical cancer treatment in low-resource settings.

It was following the announcement of results from this trial that Qiagen made its commitment to deliver one million HPV tests to poorer nations over five years, with this latest donation coming as part of that initiative.

Qiagen’s chief executive officer Peer Schatz said: “We are hopeful that by demonstrating the potential of HPV testing and by making our state-of-the-art screening technologies more accessible ? we can play a role in reducing the global burden of cervical cancer.”

Last month, Qiagen published its financial report for the first quarter of the year, a period which saw the firm register a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in net sales.
