RCN launches new protocol to encourage use of animals in healthcare
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is launching the first ever nationwide protocol governing the use of animals in healthcare settings.
Evidence-based best practice criteria will be outlined to help hospitals and other health settings to introduce animals into the care environment with confidence and see first-hand the benefits they can bring to patients.
A recent RCN survey of 750 nursing staff showed that 82 percent of respondents believe animals can help patients become more physically active, while 60 percent said animals can help to improve physical recovery.
However, most nurses said animals were not allowed in their workplace, due to concerns about hygiene and other risks that the RCN believes are overblown, particularly in light of the widespread research showing how animals can improve patient care.
As such, its new protocol – to be launched later this year – will lay out ways that the safety of patients, animals and healthcare staff can be protected, whilst still reaping the benefits that animal interaction can deliver.
Amanda Cheesley, the RCN's professional lead for long-term conditions and end-of-life care, said: "Anyone who's worked in this area can see the amazing impact animals have on the health of adults and children alike."
