RCN warns of negative impact of children’s health service cuts

18th May 2017

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has warned the government of the potentially damaging impact of its cuts to children's health services.

A report from the college has indicated that the number of health visitors has fallen by 1,000 since 2015, when there were more than 10,000 employed by the NHS, while the number of full-time school nurses has dropped by 16 percent between 2010 and 2017.

This is despite the fact that the amount of school-aged children in England has increased by more than 450,000 during that time, with the government’s 200 million pounds of cuts to public health services blamed for this trend.

Given that health visitors and school nurses play an essential role in promoting healthy mental and physical development, especially for vulnerable children, the consequences of these cuts in public health terms could end up being severe.

Janet Davies, chief executive and general secretary of the RCN, said: "There's a wealth of evidence that ill health in childhood can have a detrimental impact in adulthood. If these cuts continue, we're heading for more health problems, more inequality and even more pressure on our public services down the line."
