RCVS calls for certainty on EU staff’s rights to remain in UK
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has called on the government to provide swift assurances that veterinary professionals from the EU will be welcome to continue working in the UK.
A new report has been published by the organisation examining the impact of last year's referendum vote on European veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses, indicating that many are suffering negative effects from the ongoing uncertainty over their post-Brexit status.
Polling 5,572 veterinary surgeons who graduated from an EU vet school outside the UK, it was shown that 73 percent would like to continue to work in the UK, but that 41 percent were not optimistic about their future.
Moreover, 67 percent said they found the uncertainty about their future difficult and 64 percent felt less welcome in the country as a result. It was also shown that 88 percent of respondents believed the UK will suffer a skills shortage if non-UK EU national vets are made to leave.
Chris Tufnell, president of the RCVS, said: "This survey makes the strongest possible case that the government must act fast to reassure our EU colleagues in practices, universities and industry that they are welcome to stay in the UK."
