Regional centres ‘will help trauma patients’

The Royal College of Surgeons of England has claimed that the establishment of regional centres around the UK will significantly improve conditions for trauma patients.

According to new plans, which have been examined by the organisation, there is a need in the UK for regional service planners and commissioners to oversee the development of a functional trauma system.

The guidance outlines aspects including staffing, equipment, space and experience for establishments that may be set up as major trauma centres and units.

Richard Collins, vice-president of the college, commented: “Patients with severe multiple injuries from, for example, a major road traffic or industrial accident, need specialist care in a dedicated major trauma centre.”

The Royal College of Surgeons of England supervises the training of surgeons in approved posts and provides educational and practical workshops for these individuals and other medical professionals at each stage of their careers.
