Report: around 2m cancer diagnoses expected during next parliament

The number of people diagnosed with cancer each year will rise during the coming parliamentary term, according to a report.

Estimates from Cancer Research UK have indicated that the yearly number of British people receiving a cancer diagnosis will exceed 400,000 by 2020 – up from an annual figure of around 357,000 in 2014.

This means that during the length of the next parliament, around two million people in the UK will be diagnosed with some form of the disease – a trend that will result in even more pressure being placed on an overstretched NHS.

In England, the target of 85 percent of patients starting treatment for cancer within 62 days has not been met for three years, prompting Cancer Research UK to urge all parties contesting the June 8th general election to pledge action to tackle this problem.

Specifically, the charity is calling for cross-party support for the Cancer Strategy for England, which was published in 2015 to outline the steps needed if the NHS is to provide patients with cancer care equal to the best in the world.

Sarah Woolnough, Cancer Research UK's executive director of policy and information, said: "We know that action must be taken, and the Cancer Strategy provides a plan for how to do this – but it can only be achieved by ensuring the NHS has the resources to prevent, diagnose and treat more people."
