Report highlights major increase in NHS treatment waiting times
NHS waiting times have seen a significant increase in the last few years, according to a new report from the Royal College of Surgeons.
As of March 2017, the number of patients waiting more than six months for NHS treatment stood at 126,188 – a rise of 180 percent from March 2013, when the number of six-month waits for treatment were at their lowest level.
For certain types of surgery, the increase in half-year waits has been even more pronounced, rising by 256 percent for ear, nose and throat procedures and 199 percent for urology procedures.
Additionally, the number of patients waiting more than nine months for treatment has also risen by 209 percent during the same period.
Clare Marx, president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "It is unacceptable for such a large number of patients to be waiting over half a year in pain and discomfort for treatment. This is the grim reality of the financial pressures facing the NHS."
The figures are particularly concerning in light of recent analysis from the Nuffield Trust showing that no political party is promising increases in NHS funding that would be enough to meet the growing demands on the health system.
