Report says GE leads in hand carried ultrasound sector

5th March 2008

Research into the hand-carried ultrasound (HCU) industry has named GE Healthcare as the worldwide leader in terms of revenue.

The second annual Klein report stated a 50 per cent rise in revenue for the group, bringing it to a total of $250 million (126.29 million pounds).

For the purposes of the report, HCUs are classed as those weighing less than 11 pounds, with the top five HCU markets within the US discovered as medicine, radiology, anaesthesiology and obstetrics and gynaecology.

“The HCU market should remain dynamic over the next five years as clinicians face increasing demand for portable ultrasound exams,” said Harvey Klein, president of Klein Biomedical Consultants.

He added that the growth rate for this type of medical device is predicted to average 17 per cent throughout the next half-decade.

Meanwhile, GE Healthcare recently announced it is to be the sole supplier of MRI technology at this year’s Olympics in Beijing.
