Review launched to address patient concerns about NHS treatments
The government has announced it will review how the NHS deals with reports from patients about side-effects from treatments.
This will focus on three areas in particular – the hormone pregnancy test Primodos, the anti-epileptic drug sodium valproate and the use of vaginal mesh.
Led by Baroness Julia Cumberlege, the review will consider what processes the NHS and its regulators follow when problems are reported by patients and how to improve communication between the different groups.
Furthermore, it will focus on whether further action is required regarding the complaints around Primodos, sodium valproate and vaginal mesh – all of which have been the subject of patient-led campaigns.
Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, commented: "Patients and their families have had to spend too much time and energy campaigning for answers in a way that has added insult to injury for many.
"I want to see if we can establish a fairer and quicker way of resolving these concerns both now and in the future."
Baroness Cumberlege added that the NHS must learn from "those it may have failed", with healthcare providers making changes where appropriate.
