Roche CEO expresses confidence in company prospects

23rd August 2011

Roche's chief executive officer (CEO) Severin Schwan has expressed confidence that the company's business prospects remain strong in the medium and long-term future.

Speaking in a Wall Street Journal interview, the business leader said he feels there are "enormous opportunities" in the pharmaceutical industry at present, as companies are only just beginning to understand how many diseases work.

He highlighted Roche's investment in targeted, personalised therapies as a key asset, suggesting that research efforts are currently only "scratching the surface" of the full range of treatments available in this area.

Mr Schwan highlighted lung cancer drug Metmab, asthma compound lebrikizumab and breast cancer treatment pertuzumab as Roche's most promising new offerings, while noting that productivity improvements are ongoing.

"We are confident that our strategic response with a clear focus on innovation will help us going forward," he added.

According to the firm's financial report last month, Roche product sales came to 21.7 billion Swiss francs (16.6 billion pounds) in the first half of 2011, which was roughly stable compared to last year.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800707663-ADNFCR
