Roche launches new thyroid cancer laboratory test

4th April 2013

Roche has announced the global launch of Elecsys Calcitonin, a new test for the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid cancer, in international territories excluding the US.

The new product is designed for the detection and lifelong monitoring of medullary thyroid cancer patients after thyroid surgery and functions by identifying elevated concentrations of calcitonin in the blood.

Calcitonin is a specific tumour marker that can help healthcare professionals diagnose this type of cancer early, making the new test a potentially important addition to medical assessment procedures for patients with non-specific symptoms.

Elecsys Calcitonin has been developed for use with the company's own Cobas modular analyser platform.

Roland Diggelmann, chief operating officer of Roche Diagnostics, said: "The development of new laboratory tests for cancer management reflects our key goal of diagnostic solutions that support healthcare professionals with clear, actionable information and can thus contribute to increasing patient survival."

This comes after the firm received US regulatory approval for a new test for use in the management of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infections last month.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801566846-ADNFCR
