Roche ‘making a lasting difference’

18th August 2008

Roche has given a progress report on its efforts to provide access to medicine, encourage scientists worldwide and other philanthropic work.

The company claims a long heritage of community involvement with a focus on social and humanitarian projects in less developed countries.

Recently, the firm has been involved in providing assistance to countries following natural disasters, including the earthquakes in China and Peru.

It engaged in partnership working efforts with local authorities and other bodies looking to rebuild the community in the village of Chocos in the Peruvian Andes 200km south of Lima after an earthquake in August 2007.

The firm notes it has also helped non-profit firms discover affordable new drugs to treat infectious diseases.

It also has expanded its international postdoctoral research fellowship programme to develop talented researchers for the future.

“Postdoctoral students supported by the Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship programme will receive scientific mentoring both from Roche and its academic partners,” the company said.

It added it will implement an internet platform by the end of the year to offer enhanced information on how to apply for this programme and the relevant research areas.

Last week, Roche divested the global rights to four pharmaceutical products to Meda for a total sum of 120 million euros (95 million pounds).
