Roche products to be supplied to UK government

29th January 2009

Roche products are set to be supplied to the UK government, it has been revealed.

The company’s therapies will be joined by influenza product Relenza manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in the initiative, meaning a total of 18.2 million doses will be provided.

Should a flu pandemic strike, it is hoped the quantity of drugs will allow for 50 per cent of the country’s population to be treated.

The UK is the second nation in Europe to undertake the project, following France.

Commenting on the initiative, Simon Jose, general manager and senior vice-president for GSK, said: “The government is recognising the vital role that antivirals are likely to have in reducing the potentially devastating effects of an influenza pandemic.”

The cost of the deal was not revealed.

Last month, a phase III study of patients revealed MabThera slows the destruction of joints in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Roche was formed in 1896.
