Roche to appoint new chief executive

20th July 2007

Roche has announced that Severin Schwan is to replace Franz B Humer as chief executive of the Roche group at the company’s next annual shareholders’ meeting due to take place on March 4th 2008. After this date, Dr Humer will retain his role as chairman of Roche Holdings

Mr Schwan is currently chief executive officer of Roche Diagnostics and his successor in this position will be announced in time. Mr Schwan was appointed to Roche Basel as a finance officer in 1993 before becoming head of global finance at Roche Diagnostics and leader of Asia-Pacific operations at the company.

He was promoted to the position of chief executive officer of Roche Diagnostics in January 2006.

Dr Humer said: “I am delighted that we are appointing Severin Schwan, a 40 year-old executive with an outstanding track record and broad international experience at both corporate and divisional level, as the new [chief executive officer].”

He added that the board of the Roche group had decided the separate the roles of chairman and chief executive officer in view of their increasing complexity, while noting that he will continue to work with both the board and the executive committee to further develop Roche.

In February 2007, Roche announced a new operating model for its global research and development activities, electing to build a new structure around a number of disease biology areas.
