Routine HIV testing needed, say experts

1st December 2010

Health experts believe routine HIV testing is required in the UK to prevent cases going undiagnosed.

A study released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) showed that more than 50 percent of all new HIV cases last year were identified late.

Meanwhile, pilot projects carried out in areas with high rates of HIV infection have found some cases are slipping through the net, BBC News reports.

In one study of emergency hospital admissions, only one-quarter of undiagnosed HIV-positive patients were correctly targeted and diagnosed.

Dr Ian Williams of the British HIV Association explained the importance of identifying the virus early.

"The later people are diagnosed with HIV, the more difficult and expensive it is to treat them, the poorer their outcome may be and the more likely they are to have transmitted the infection," he told the news provider.

According to the HPA's figures, more than 25 per cent of people with HIV are unaware they have the infection.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800267169-ADNFCR
