Royal College of Surgeons launches new cosmetic surgery advice for patients

5th October 2016

The Royal College of Surgeons has launched a new cosmetic surgery guide for patients to help them make more informed decisions about their own treatment.

Patient resources have been made available through the organisation's website offering advice on how to choose the right surgeon and hospital, explaining the risks of surgery, and giving guidance on possible complications to consider.

The web pages also include a section on questions to ask a surgeon before consenting to an operation, plus a downloadable checklist and three short animated films further explaining some of the key points.

These resources are being launched in response to a rise in the popularity of cosmetic surgery, as well as concerns about the aggressive marketing and ruthless sales techniques that some private companies employ.

Stephen Cannon, vice-president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "Our advice is that if you are thinking of having some kind of work done, make sure you consult a surgeon who is trained and experienced in the procedure you are considering."

The body will also publish a register of certified surgeons in different cosmetic surgical procedures over the coming months to make it easier for patients to check the credentials of practitioners.
